Will yours be a green 2011?

With the excesses of Christmas behind us but New Year's celebrations just around the corner, this is the time to reflect on 2010 and consider what 2011 holds for us.

Most of us are getting quite good at being green and hopefully you have already been converted to organic skin care and make up!

However by doing just a little bit more, you could help 2011 be an even greener year for you than 2010.

Here are some suggestions:

  • Take home plastic bottles and cans to recycle instead of disposing of them in public bins

  • Don't leave your mobile charging all night - pop it on charge when you get home and it should be done in a couple of hours. Remember to turn off the charger afterwards!

  • Switch to green cleaning products and buy some reusable cloths rather than using throwaway kitchen towel

  • Switch to a green electricity supplier, like Ecotricity

  • Set your computer to hibernate after a short period of inactivity or buy an eco button

  • Sign up to a mail preference service which will remove you from junk mailing lists

  • Get on top of those jobs around the house which can cause wastage - fix that leaking tap and dripping overflow pipe!

  • Install a water butt linked to your guttering system and use the water for your plants or topping up your pond

Roz Savage: adventurer of the year?

National Geographic are searching for the People's Choice Adventurer of the Year and we are delighted to see that Roz Savage, ocean rower, is in the last 10.

If you haven't heard about Roz before, she is a remarkable lady who one day decided to give up the life of a management consultant and row across oceans. What's more, it is her birthday today - Happy Birthday Roz!

This year, she became the first woman to row solo across the Pacific Ocean, a feat to build on her previous conquering of the Atlantic in 2005. To date she has rowed more than 11,000 miles and cumulatively spent almost a year of her life at sea.

Her slogan, "Rowing towards a greener future," sums up her eco ethos, and she has also been named a United Nations Climate Hero.

In 2011 she plans to row from Freemantle to Mumbai, and after that, she will brave the ocean crossing from New Jersey to London in 2012.

National Geographic - vote for Adventurer of the Year!
Green People has long supported Roz in her various adventures, supplying organic sunscreen and other ocean-friendly toiletries for her to use whilst at sea for weeks at a time.

Please join us in supporting this amazing lady by voting for her to become National Geographic's Adventurer of the Year.

Are you getting your beauty sleep?

Getting a good night's sleep really does make you more beautiful, a new study has found.

Nearly everyone has stayed up late and thought the next day that they aren't looking their best but scientists have now proven this with a simple experiment.

They sent their 23 volunteers to bed for a good night's sleep - 8 hours - and photographed them the next day. The following night their sleep was restricted to just 5 hours, 2 hours less than recommended, and they were photographed once more.

They were then rated on a 1-10 attractiveness scale by members of the public.

The participants were rated as less attractive and less healthy when they were tired than when they were well rested.

Scientists from the Surrey Sleep Research Centre believe that the effects of 'beauty sleep' could be even more pronounced if the photos had been taken at a different time.

"The photographs were taken during the daytime when the biological clock promotes wakefulness.

"Can you imagine how sleep loss makes you look at night or early in the morning when the circadian clock (body clock) promotes sleep?"

Fresh mind = fresh skin
Just as the night time hours are vital for reviving your mind, they are also important for your skin.

During the night your skin 'breathes' to rid itself of waste as well as repair any damage caused during the day.

By allowing yourself a good 8 hours a night for sleep and treating your skin to a nourishing night cream, you can give your skin a boost.

Try also sleeping on your back, rather than on your side. Resting your face on the pillow in the same way every night can lead to sleep lines. Over time, these lines become etched onto the skin and do not disappear when you get out of bed.

Beeswax/berry wax vs petrochemicals

Green People is proud to use berry wax and organic beeswax in its natural skin care products instead of petrochemicals like paraffin.

They both perform a similar role - creating a protective barrier on the skin - but why should you use one over another?

Here are a few reasons:
  1. Beeswax and berry wax are both truly natural ingredients. They do not need intensive industrial processing, like paraffin, which causes harm to the environment.

  2. Beeswax and berry wax are both renewable resources, whereas the mining of fossil fuels cannot be reversed.

  3. Beeswax and berry wax nourish the skin whilst protecting it, whereas petrochemicals create a clingfilm-like barrier that prevents the skin from breathing.

  4. Beeswax and berry wax rarely cause irritation to the skin, whereas mineral oils (a form of petrochemical) are a common cause of break outs.

  5. Beeswax can be certified organic (which is what we use in our natural skin care products) whereas petrochemicals never will be. Berry wax is totally natural but is not yet available in a certified organic form.
Here are some of our products which contain organic beeswax:

Anti- Aging Skin Care .Do You Need It ?

by Marion Greenfield

One of the most interesting topics on skin care is 'anti -aging skin care'. As one gets older, the natural defence of our skin (and in fact of the whole body) weakens. 'Anti aging skin care' is about protecting your skin from the negative effects of aging process. 'Anti -aging skin care' helps in maintaining a young and fresh look for a longer period of time. However, 'anti -aging skin care' doesn't end just here. Besides maintaining your looks (good looks), 'anti- aging skin care' is also about retaining the resistance to disease. Though the awareness about anti- aging has increased over a period of time, still a lot of people are unable to recognize the aging symptoms (and hence are unable to determine if they are in need of additional anti -aging skin care measures).

Here is a list of visible anti- aging symptoms that will help you in the planning and execution of your strategy for anti- aging skin care: baldness, forgetfulness, greying hair, wrinkle formation, loss of eyesight or hearing loss and menopause. The occurrence of one or more such symptoms is an indicator for upping the ante on anti -aging skin care.

Note that we are talking about introduction of additional measures for anti- aging skin care, we are not talking about starting 'anti- aging skin care' altogether. 'Anti- aging skin care' actually starts much before the symptoms of anti -aging appear. Serious anti- aging skin care is building and following a proper skin care routine much earlier in life (say in your teens). Anti- aging skin care doesn't mean adoption of any special skin care procedure but just following a normal procedure in the right earnest. Eating a lot of fruits, avoiding stress, drinking a lot of water and using natural therapies can delay the aging process.

Once the signs of aging start showing up, you should start using some additional measures in the form of anti- aging skin care products. The market is full of anti aging skin care products. In fact there are so many anti aging skin care products that they will probably find you even before you find them. Also, with age, the skin undergoes significant change. So you will need to analyse your current skin care procedure to check if it still holds good i.e. if it is still suitable for your skin.

You should remember that aging is a natural process and there is nothing that can stop it from happening. All these anti- aging skin measures just help in delaying the aging process .for a while .But NOT Forever. There will come a time when you will love the skin you are in. Below are some suggestions for Anti-Aging products that do help.

Anti- aging skin care products remind me of the song '18 till I die'. Indeed, anti- aging skin care products are very popular today; and why not, who doesn't want to look young for ever?

Talking of ant- aging skin care products, the first thing that comes to mind is vitamin C based anti- aging skin care products. These products work by enabling the synthesis of collagen (a structural protein that is found in skin). This category of anti -aging skin care products is related to anti-oxidants. Ant-i aging skin care products that are based on vitamin C are, however, posed with the danger of getting oxidised themselves (as they come into contact with air during their usage). So some anti- aging skin care products are based on the derivatives of vitamin C, which are more stable and less expensive. However, the effectiveness of such anti -aging skin care is not as much as it is for vitamin C based ant aging skin care products.

Besides vitamin C, vitamin E and lipoic acid are anti-oxidants too. Vitamin E is a fat-soluble anti-oxidant that is found in human blood and helps in building resistance against infection. Vitamin E is also known to inhibit cancer. Liponic acid is known to combat the signs of aging very effectively by reversing the skin damage caused by the aging process.

Phytochemicals form the other category of anti aging skin care products. Phytochemical are special chemicals that are extracted from plants. There are a variety of phytochemicals that are in use today. Phytochemicals prevent occurrence of cancer of certain types; these include prostate cancer, breast cancer and colon cancer. That is why they find their place in anti- aging skin care products.

Some B-vitamins like B5, B6 and B12 are also in use for anti -aging skin care products.

The field of anti -aging skin care products is vast and needs a lot of research. Though the currently available products are effective, they still have challenges to combat. Hopefully, these challenges will get resolved in due course and help get better and cheaper anti- aging skin care products.

However, anti- aging skin care products should be used only as a supplement to the natural ways of skin and body care. So, drinking a lot of water, getting a good night sleep, exercising regularly, maintaining healthy eating habits and keeping stress at bay are essential means of delaying the aging process. No anti- aging skin care product can replace them really.

And finally remember EVERYONE has their own Natural Beauty whatever their age.
8yrs to 100 yrs.

Moles may denote anti-ageing benefits

Beauty spots have long been desired as a feature of fashion but did you know that moles could also mean naturally younger-looking skin?

Researchers from Kings College London have been studying the characteristics of people with many moles and have found a number of interesting links, including youthful looks.

Those with a lot of moles appear to have skin that rejects the signs of ageing, such as wrinkles, blemishes and fine lines, for longer.

This is down to tiny strands of DNA in the body's cells which have an ending on known as telomeres - similar to the aglet on the end of a shoelace. Every time the cell divides, the telomere gets shorter until it breaks down to such an extent that the cell is destroyed. This is the normal process of ageing.

In people with plentiful moles, the telomeres tend to be longer, which means the cells themselves last longer. Their skin therefore maintains a youthful look beyond that of others who have naturally shorter telomeres.

Look after your telomeres!
Green People uses an ingredient known as Baicalin which has been shown to reduce the damage that telomeres suffer each time the cell divides.

This is a natural ingredient, derived from the Skullcap herb, and we use it to give anti-ageing benefits in the Organic Homme range.

Are you scent sensitive?

It's a situation that we at Green People hear about all too often. People are desperate for fragrance-free, neutral products because fragrances irritate their skin, make their eyes water or other symptoms of allergy.

Sitting on the bus, spending time at work or relaxing in a cafe can all turn into allergy-triggering events thanks to the strong artificial perfumes that many people wear. The festive season can be particularly bad, with everyone spritzing on scents for Christmas parties and celebrations.

Perfumes are usually made from a mix of chemicals, unknown to consumers and untested for safety. Many of the chemicals used are from synthetic sources and can be irritating to sensitive skin.

It isn't just actual perfumes that are a problem for those with fragrance allergies, however. Fragranced products of any kind, from hand washes to hair conditioner, are just as likely to trigger a scent allergy as designer perfumes.

Although it is usually artificial fragrances that are the cause of allergy problems, it is also possible to be allergic to essential oils - the natural fragrances we use in our organic skin care products.

This is why we developed the Organic Base No Scent range. Made without essential oils or perfume of any kind, these fragrance-free products are ideal for those with essential oil allergies or multiple sensitivities.

A tip for glowing winter skin

We've just heard about another tip for glowing winter skin to add to the winter skin guide we posted the other day.

Charlotte, the founder of Green People, told us that countries that experience bitter winters, like Norway and Sweden, make much greater use of oils to keep their skin hydrated and healthy during the coldest months.

If the UK has another winter like last winter, beset with snow and ice, we could do well to incorporate their advice into our skin care routine.

Here are two of our oils which you may like to blend with your favourite Green People moisturiser:

The Anti Ageing Facial Oil can be mixed with Vita Min Fix, Day Solution or Reviving Day & Night Cream to up the oil quota and increase the moisture retentive properties of these natural moisturisers.

This is a lovely facial oil that contains Jojoba oil, Rosehip oil and Rose Geranium and leaves the skin feeling very soft. It is suitable for all skin types.

Similarly, the Sheer Pamper Body Oil can be combined with any of our organic body lotions - Hydrating Body Lotion, Aloe Vera Body Lotion, Body Comfort or Body Bliss. We recommend mixing it with the No Scent Hand & Body Lotion so you can fully enjoy its gorgeous scent though!

Enriched with Jasmine, Avocado and Pomegranate, you cannot help but fall in love with this sumptuous body oil.

Green People attends Ecotricity's Nemesis launch

Green People's founder, Charlotte Vøhtz, yesterday attended the sparkling launch of the 'Nemesis', a wind-powered car dreamed up by our sustainability partner Ecotricity.

The Nemesis is a beautiful car described as "exotic and desirable" by Dale Vince, chief executiveof Ecotricity, who commissioned its unique design.

"We wanted to prove electric cars can be quick to develop, beautiful to look at, cheap to run, and run entirely on wind power," Dale said.

The Nemesis is powered by wind-generated electricity and can go further (150 miles between charges) and faster (170mph) than the existing offerings on the market. Next year it will challenge the British electric car land speed record, with any luck taking it into the history books.

Also at the event were ex-racing driver Damon Hill, who is a staunch supporter of sustainable motoring and environmentally friendly vehicles. He is seen here with Dale and the Nemesis.

Krt from Junky Styling, the ethical fashion label which recently featured on "The Apprentice", also attended the unveiling and is seen here with Charlotte:

Charlotte's daughter Sandra poses with the Nemesis:

You can find out more about the Nemesis on Ecotricity's Youtube page and on Dale Vince's blog.

Ready your skin for winter

So you've started thinking about Christmas shopping, you've turned the heating on and you're getting used to the dark evenings - the classic signs that winter is officially beginning.

But have you shifted your skin care regime to suit the changing environment?

Winter is generally a time of lower humidity, which means there is less water carried in the air. Central heating also creates a dry air environment, while wind and cold days also add their challenges to your skin.

Your skin is sensitive to these changes and will naturally become drier and requiring of more moisture in order to stay healthy and soft.

1) Facial Oil

If you are not already using a facial oil, add one to your regime. Oils are a great way of feeding your skin nutrients and our Anti Ageing Facial Oil also helps to support the structure of the skin.

2) Face Mask

Use a deep-cleansing face mask to keep skin feeling clear and fresh. Our Purifying Mineral Mask absorbs impurities from the skin and can help you to handle breakouts caused by the changing seasons.

3) Rich Moisturiser

Switch to a richer moisturiser to combat the low humidity. The Reviving Day & Night Cream is a lovely anti-wrinkle cream that is packed with natural actives to nourish and pamper dry skin.

4) Avoid drying products

Some skin and body care products are drying on the skin because they contain ingredients such as SLS and ethyl alcohol. Make extra effort to avoid these during the winter season.

What's in your shampoo?

An article in the Daily Mail recently claimed that there was little difference between expensive shampoos and cheaper brands, all found in high street shops.

It revealed that the shampoos from £1 to £50 shared many of the same ingredients and that most are up to 80% aqua (water).

However, look away from the big brands and you will find there are some quite major differences.

Green People shampoos do cost more (around the £10 mark for 200ml) but are made without cheap, harsh ingredients like Sodium lauryl sulphate and Sodium laureth sulphate. These ingredients have been found to irritate skin and can be a cause of scalp itchiness for some. We choose to use gentler alternatives to create the foam in our shampoos.

Another difference is that we base our shampoos on organic aloe vera, not water. This means that our shampoos go a lot further than normal shampoos because they are more concentrated. You need to use such a tiny amount that you will find one bottle lasts far longer than the equivalent mainstream shampoo.

If you have looked at our ingredients, you might be wondering why the aqua is listed first in our ingredients if we don't base our shampoos on it.

This is because we rehydrate our aloe vera from a powder form, which is much cheaper and more eco-friendly to transport, and also does not requite preservatives. We have to list aqua because of this rehydration process.

In addition to this, we also use extracts and essential oils in some of our shampoos which perform special roles.

For example, the Pineapple extract and Rosemary essential oils found in the Rosemary Shampoo work to stimulate the scalp and guard against a build up of dead skin cells.

So, in essence, not all shampoos are quite the same, especially if you look away from mainstream brands and consider organic shampoos that have been carefully formulated with natural ingredients.

Gel reveals absorbing nature of skin

Many people consider their skin to be an impenetrable barrier that can stop anything they put on it from being absorbed into their body.

However a new form of contraception is revealing that this is really not the case.

A contraceptive gel has been developed that, although still in the testing stage, appears to be effective in preventing pregnancy.

The see-through gel can be rubbed into the arms, legs, shoulders or abdomen and is absorbed through the skin to deliver the necessary hormones (progesterone and oestrogen) to the body.

It is a great example of why we should think a bit more about the ingredients of skin creams, make-up and toiletries and how they can affect our bodies.

Ingredients such as parabens are mild oestrogen-mimics, whilst the lanolin found in cosmetics may contain organophosphates from sheep dip!

Polyethylene glycol, ethyl alcohol and propylene glycol are all commonly used in skin care products and help to transport other ingredients into the skin.

Charlotte features in Natural Beauty Yearbook 2011

Charlotte Vøhtz, founder of Green People, has been named 3rd in the Who's Who in natural beauty 2011 by the Natural Beauty Yearbook - for the second year run

The Natural Beauty Yearbook is a trade publication that details all the biggest and best names in organic cosmetics and skin care.

Whilst other natural beauty personalities have come and gone from the top 10 in the past year, we are delighted to see that Charlotte has remained at a high-profile position 3.

The Yearbook referred to Charlotte's visit to Ghana to foster relationships with the fairly traded shea butter producers and also the reformulation of the entire Organic Homme range.

Ian Taylor, Green People's Information & Research Manager, also featured in the Yearbook with an article on how to weed our the pseudo naturals from the verified non-synthetic cosmetics. We'll be featuring it on the Green People website soon!

Propylene glycol linked to allergies

We've just seen another story in the news about allergies in children, completely separate to yesterday's story about allergies and autumn babies.

A Swedish study has found that chemicals including propylene glycol - found in skin care products, paints and a wide range of other household products - may increase a child's allergy risk by as much as 180%.

The researchers analysed bedroom air in 400 children's bedrooms looked for 8 different compounds.

They discovered that where they found a higher concentration of PGEs (propylene glycol and glycol ethers), the child had between a 50% and 180% greater chance of having allergic conditions such as asthma, rhinitis and eczema.

The professor involved in the study commented: "Our findings once again raise the question of the health-related aspects of chemicals in our everyday lives.

"Particularly when it comes to exposure in our home environments, since small children and pregnant women spend a great deal of their time there and there are many indications that exposing fetuses and infants is probably more risky."

Propylene glycol-free skin care
Green People's natural children's skin care products and organic baby products are all made without propylene glycol and other chemicals such as phthalates, parabens and artificial fragrances.

Autumn babies more prone to allergies

New research has found that babies born in October and November are more prone to allergies than those born at other times of the year.

9.5% of 'autumn babies' showed an allergic response, compared to 5% of 'summer babies', and were 3 times more likely as the latter to be allergic to milk and eggs.

The scientists involved in the study believe that this may be due to a critical period when the baby is around 11 weeks old, which falls in April or May for autumn babies.

One of the researchers explained explained: "Children having their early gestational period in the pollen season for broad-leafed trees are more prone to sensitisation to food allergens than other children."

The study looked at over 5,000 Finnish children but researchers say it is still too early to determine all of the factors involved in the development of allergies.

Levels of allergies have risen rapidly over the past 50 years and now 30% of the UK population suffer from an allergy at some point during their life. Allergies can display in a variety of forms; skin allergies, asthma, food allergies and intolerances, and, at the most serious end of the allergy spectrum, anaphylaxis.

Many of those with skin allergies find relief in Green People products as we do not use common irritants such as SLS or artificial fragrances. We also have a special fragrance free range, Organic Base, which offers a range of bathroom essentials for those with ultra sensitive skin and allergies to essential oils.

How you choose the appropriate serum for you

by ronali

Product Innovation in the blood of cows produced in the past is now the right thing to foster. Particularly high concentration of active ingredients provides maximum serum effect, and should use it on a daily basis to enjoy a well-preserved skin

To this day, we were safe moisturizer will save us from punishment of the aging of the skin, but sticking shelves tempt us Saromim wonderful promise and leave us confused: give up on the hook to prevent a waste of money and another jar? Or leave the serum in the store and make do with old cream? The answer is simple: Do not give up any of them. The cream is designed for everyday use, while the serum used only occasionally. The cream contains a low concentration of active ingredients, serum contains a high concentration of their. So why not produce more product to the high concentration of moisture cream ingredients? First of all, that such action was driving up the cream at least twice, since it's very expensive materials. But more important - simply is not necessary. Skin in need of concentrated active ingredients no more than once - twice a week.

Anti Aging Serum

Not suitable for each serum. Advisable to check before using Concentrated serum has another advantage: because it contains more elements lead, it allows better penetration of active ingredients - even those where the cream and spread over it. That's another good reason, though certainly not the only one, use it.

A Brief History of serum Serum cosmetic born in 30th of the 20th century. Original serum client name - liquid blood plasma without clotting materials - because of the similarity in their activities.Liquid serum carries within cells essential food components (sugars, proteins, amino acids, minerals, etc.) while turning the waste to the kidneys. The result of all this activity also affects the appearance of the skin, rich food that gets concentrated stretching it, wetting and raise wrinkles. Since serum fluid concentrated form contains all the skin needs, modern cosmetics companies called the name of each cosmetic product we know today. Although cosmetic serum contains no serum in the sense of fluid, but he fills the same purpose: a very concentrated skin treatment.

Incidentally, in the past produced the blood serum cosmetic manufacturers bought cattle in the slaughterhouse. They separated the blood cells and liquid, add preservatives and marketing the produce. Luckily, today's serum did not contain blood of cattle, but an impressive range of cosmetic natural materials many different ensembles. The reason: because it's not a liquid "real", all cosmetics maker gives its interpretation of serum. Serum can be found that firm, enter, wetting and stretching the hand is still counting.

The Anti Aging Longevity Revolution

by Bob

Before anyone would even care to pursue the Anti Aging Revolution, there wants to be a joy in your life. Whether you obtain that joy with a life's philosophy or being a practicing Christian is not relevant to our discussion.

If you wake up at half-dozen:00am and are anxious to urge your day started therefore you would possibly expertise the joys and disappointments of the day, you may probably be interested and a motivation to look into the evolving science of anti aging.

What if you'll live to the age of 100 in as healthy and vigorous condition as you are right now? Or if you are already suffering the ill effects of aging, you'll turn back the clock twenty years and keep that approach till the century mark?

And what if the extra thirty years added to your era allowed you to measure long enough to take advantage of the new scientific breakthroughs so that you simply healthy functional life span may be extended to 120 or 130 years and beyond?

HOW THE ANTIAGING REVOLUTION STARTED

Dr. Rudman's created his initial study, revealed on July five, 1990, in the New England Journal of Medicine. He compared the results of six months' of HGH injections on 12 men, ages sixty one to eighty one, with an age-matched management group.

The results created headlines all over the world.

The AMERICAN ACADEMY OF ANTI-AGING MEDICINE, with then 5000 members, stated the body's reduced production of human growth hormone (HGH) is a primary reason behind aging.

Warnings over toothpaste chemical

The EU Scientific Community on Consumer Safety has called for a widely used chemical found in toothpastes, hand washes and cosmetics to undergo further safety tests.

Triclosan is a potent antifungal and antibacterial agent that was first developed for use in hospitals.

However its uses have grown far outside that and traces of Triclosan are now found in 75% of Americans. Levels in the EU population are likely to be similar.

It has been linked with hormone disruption and its widespread use is also prompting concern over bacterial resistance.

Some degree of resistance to Triclosan has already been seen in some strains of E Coli, salmonella, listeria and MRSA.

This is a concern because it may mean that antibiotics and other medicines may be less effective.

Some large brands of toothpaste manufacturer continue to use Triclosan as they feel the benefits outweigh the risks.

Triclosan-free toothpastes

At Green People we do not use Triclosan, nor other chemicals such as SLS or Fluoride, in our natural toothpastes. Instead, you will find natural antibacterial agents such as Myrrh and Vitamin C which do not cause bacterial resistance.

We also do not use Triclosan in our natural liquid soaps, hand sanitizer or any other products.
